About
Mezzo-Soprano Alexandra Sorensen (she/her), who was raised singing in a little house in the woods in Prince Edward Island/Epekwitk, graduated in June 2024 with a Diploma in Opera from the University of Toronto. Alexandra had an incredibly rewarding month in residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity as a part of their Opera/Interplay program this June. During her time there, she performed as “Offred’s Mother” and “Rita” in a newly orchestrated version of The Handmaid’s Tale by Poul Ruders, arranged by Daniel Schlosberg.
Artist Statement
I believe that young artists are the future of opera. By breaking stereotypes and outdated values while keeping the beauty of what opera is, we will take this industry into the next century.

Land Acknowledgment
Alexandra is currently living in Tkaronto on Treaty 13 territory and wishes to acknowledge that we are on the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Tkaronto is now home to many First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Alexandra was born and raised in Epekwitk, lying in the water, which is on the unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq people.
The history of opera involves colonialism and racist practices, and as a community we must acknowledge this history by listening, learning, and giving space for Indigenous stories to be told.
